Three weeks after the Louvre museum robbery, as investigators tried to figure out who the thieves were and why it was so easy to steal the French crown jewels, another mystery remained: who the "man in the hat" was.
The stylish young man in a hat was photographed outside the museum that Sunday and his photo went viral on social media, fueling numerous theories about his identity.
The first two mysteries were quickly solved: the thieves' carelessness with DNA allowed the police to identify the perpetrators, while the Louvre director admitted that security with security cameras was insufficient.
But the "man in the hat" had remained an enigma... until now.
It turns out he's a local teenager, a fan of Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot, who just happened to be at a real crime scene.
Pedro Elias Garzon Delvaux, 15, from Rambouillet, southwest of Paris, told the Associated Press (AP) that he had planned to visit the Louvre with his family, but found it closed.
“We didn't know a robbery had happened,” he said.
While asking officers why the museum was closed, an AP photographer documenting the event included the teenager in a photo.
Pedro only realized the photo had gone viral four days later, when a friend sent him a screenshot asking: "Is that you?"
When he confirmed it was really him, the friend told him the photo had five million views on TikTok. “I was a little surprised,” Pedro told the AP.
He was even more surprised when his mother called to tell him that the photo had been published in The New York Times. “It really impressed me,” he said, “because I read that newspaper and it’s not every day you’re in The New York Times.”
“People told me: 'You've become a star.' I was amazed that with just one photo you can go viral for a few days.”
Asked why he wore an old-fashioned vest and fedora hat to visit the museum, Pedro said he had started dressing like this recently, inspired by 20th-century statesmen and fictional detectives.
“I like to be stylish,” he told the AP. “I even go to school like this.”
As for the speculation about his photo circulating online, some even thought it could be a real detective or an image created by artificial intelligence, Pedro explained why he chose to remain silent for weeks.
“I didn’t want to say right away that it was me,” he said. “There’s a mystery with this picture, so you have to hold it a little longer.”
