In a solemn and moving speech delivered to the United States Congress, Congressman Raul Ruiz honored the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of Aziz Rezaei, an Iranian woman whose story embodies the unstoppable struggle for freedom and human dignity in Iran.
Affectionately known as ‘Aziz’, meaning ‘beloved’, she was hailed as a ‘mother of resistance’. Born in Tehran in 1929, Aziz Rezaei’s life took a tragic turn when her family was caught up in the vortex of political repression. The congressman revealed that Aziz experienced unimaginable pain: the loss of nine members of her family – four sons, three daughters and two sons-in-law – killed by two successive dictatorial regimes, first that of the Shah and then the clerical regime that followed.
The speech emphasized that her children's only 'crime' was their involvement in Iran's democratic opposition movement, which dared to demand freedom, justice and respect for human rights. Aziz herself was arrested in 1975 and spent more than three years in prison, where she was subjected to inhuman torture: whipped, hung upside down and held in solitary confinement, but she never surrendered.
The scars on the soles of her feet remain a living testament to the brutality she endured. The tragedy continued after the 1979 revolution. In 1982, her daughter, Azar, while eight months pregnant, was killed along with her husband by the Revolutionary Guards. This forced Aziz to flee the country and continue her struggle from exile.
Today, in her 90s and living in Paris, Aziz Rezaei remains a steadfast symbol of hope. She believes that the movement to liberate Iran is still strong and active. The congressman described her story not only as a story of suffering, but as a testament to the resilience and indomitable spirit of the Iranian people.
Concluding his speech, the congressman called for the values of freedom and democracy to never be taken for granted and reaffirmed the United States' support for all those fighting for fundamental rights around the world. He expressed the hope that Aziz's courage would serve as an inspiration and that one day the people of Iran would be able to live in freedom, peace, justice, and democracy.
