Albania is accelerating investments in defense infrastructure with the aim of becoming NATO's main logistics hub in the Western Balkans.
In a meeting held on May 29, 2026 at SHAPE headquarters in Mons, Belgium, where the Minister of Defense, Ermal Nufi, was received by the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), General Alexus G. Grynkewich.
During the meeting, strategic projects aimed at increasing the Alliance's logistical and operational capacities in the region were presented.
At the center of the plan are two major projects: the Porto Romano Naval Base and the Pan-European Corridor VIII.
The RKS News article states that the Porto Romano base is being designed according to NATO standards and will be capable of hosting warships, submarines and large military transport vehicles.
Meanwhile, Corridor VIII will create a fast road and rail connection from the Albanian Adriatic coast, through North Macedonia, to the Bulgarian Black Sea ports.
The report also highlights NATO's concerns about hybrid threats, cyberattacks, and foreign influence in the Western Balkans. In this context, the United States has supported Albania's modernization plans, considering the country an important logistical hub for the Alliance.
According to the article, the Albanian government is also investing in parallel in the revival of the defense industry, including the shipbuilding, drone and aviation sectors, as well as in strengthening air defense through the modernization of radar networks and the purchase of advanced surface-to-air missile systems.
These investments aim to support the new strategic role that Albania seeks to take on within NATO and in the Balkan region.
