Journalist Klodiana Lala stated that in September there may be attempts by the majority to weaken SPAK by removing its powers.
Lala emphasized that a problem for prosecutors is the end of their 9-year mandate, and some of them who have investigated the most dangerous gangs may find themselves in district prosecutor's offices or on the streets, which would put them at risk.
Faced with these conditions, Lala adds that SPAK prosecutors are seeking the possibility of re-nomination, but that this can only be achieved by amending the Constitution.
"Some of the prosecutors in SPAK are a headache for Edi Rama. The entire Albanian political class, both left and right, have an interest in controlling this structure. The Xhafaj Commission was the most sophisticated way that was chosen by the majority to keep it or put it under control. But I think they will choose another strategy. It is easy to undo a prosecutor whenever you want, it is enough not to extend their mandate and these 20 people who are there, to exercise the function of prosecutor, in Saranda for example. A prosecutor who has hit the Troplini gang, a prosecutor who has hit the Suel Çela gang, Franc and Hajdar Çopja, other criminal groups, the moment he takes to the streets the next day...
I think they will want to undo the powers, with legal changes, for example, to remove the investigation of politicians and return them to being investigated by the general prosecutor's office, and there the political structure is easy and influential. There is no need to undo SPAK as an institution, but remove its powers and leave it like a fish out of water. I can leave it powers for organized crime, but I don't see SPAK if it doesn't investigate both crime and politics. If one criminal falls, five others rise if they have the support of politics, in this aspect I think that the investigation of crime and politics should go in parallel. Does SPAK need to be strengthened? I think so. The first three years were fruitless", Lala said, among other things, in "The Unexposed".
