The White House's new National Security Strategy warns that the continent is threatened with "civilizational obliteration" and that Europe risks no longer being a reliable ally of Washington. The text changes the course of transatlantic politics and sets off immediate alarm in European capitals.
"The trajectory of US policy was clear even before Trump's arrival, which has only accelerated an irreversible path. The US is engaged in an increasingly difficult, complex and fierce competition with China and every action, decision and behavior must be read in this context. Trump has simply made it clear that the EU is of little or no use to him in this competition.
This was stated by Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto in a post on X where he commented on the US National Security Strategy, adding that "every decision, every future action will be approached with a single objective: strengthening the US in its competition with China."
The Minister of Defense says he is not upset by the US's tough stance towards Europe, and this is because he has always said we cannot close our eyes to reality.
Thus, on the very day that the Pentagon announced its approval of the sale of $300 million worth of missiles to Italy, Crosetto says that "the US is engaged in an increasingly difficult, complex and fierce competition with China, and its every action, decision and behavior must be read in this context. Trump has simply made it clear that the EU is of little or no use to him in this competition."
The shocking document in which the White House harshly criticized Europe, even threatening its decline and disappearance, has received its first response from Brussels.
"When it comes to decisions that affect the EU, these are taken by the EU and for the EU. This includes those that concern our regulatory autonomy, the protection of freedom of expression and the rules-based international order," an EU Commission spokesperson said.
"Allies are stronger together," he added. The US document also sharply criticized Europe on freedom of expression, which EU rules would undermine.
