A British anti-drug operation has uncovered a large quantity of cocaine worth around £18 million on the coast of Cornwall, in southwest England, The Guardian reports .
The incident occurred in September last year, when a suspicious boat was spotted by the British coastguard. After a 28-nautical-mile chase, the boat crashed into the shore and three people tried to escape across the sand, but were arrested on the spot.
The footage was made public by British media only yesterday, August 2.
The boat was carrying Peter Williams, an English fisherman, Scott Johnston from Hampshire and Edwin Yahir Tabora Baca, a Colombian national. They had thrown 11 packages of cocaine overboard, six of which were recovered.
Investigations revealed that this was part of a scheme called "Asdo", where large ships from Latin America dump the drugs at sea, and then boatmen from British criminal organizations collect them to smuggle them into the country through quiet beach areas.
The operation also involved three men from Essex who were waiting on land to pick up the drugs and distribute them in London and the surrounding areas. Another suspect, Alex Fowlie, had bought the speedboat for £70,000 and was the main organiser.
Seven people have been arrested and four of them have already been convicted of drug trafficking. The others will appear in court on August 21.
