A young footballer, a former Premier League talent, has lost his life in a serious car accident while returning home after a match.

Ethan McLeod, 21, who had come through Wolverhampton's academy and was most recently playing for Macclesfield, died after his vehicle, a white Mercedes, crashed into a side barrier on the M1 motorway, near Northampton.

The incident happened at around 10.40pm, on the northbound M1 near junction 15. Despite the efforts of members of the public and emergency services, McLeod was pronounced dead at the scene.

Macclesfield confirmed his death in a touching statement, saying Ethan was returning from the team's 2-1 win over Bradford Town.

It is with a heavy heart and a deep sense of shock that Macclesfield Town can confirm the passing of 21-year-old striker Ethan McLeod ,” the club said in a statement. “ Ethan was an extremely talented and respected footballer with his whole life ahead of him. But above all, his positive personality and special smile endeared him to everyone .”

The club added that his loss has left "deep mental scars" on all team members, stressing that his legacy and memory will live on forever.

McLeod spent ten years in Wolverhampton's academy, including loan spells at Alverchurch. After leaving Molineux, he played for Rashhall Olympic and Stourbridge before signing for Macclesfield in the National League North in July this year.

Following the accident, the northbound lane of the M1 was closed for more than eight hours.

Northamptonshire Police said the accident was a single-vehicle collision and appealed for witnesses or people with dashcam footage to contact authorities to help with the investigation.
