Infamous former Hollywood film producer Harvey Weinstein has been hospitalized after testing positive for COVID-19 and contracting double pneumonia. The 72-year-old is being treated in the prison ward of Bellevue Hospital in New York.
Diabetes, high blood pressure, spinal stenosis and fluid in his heart and lungs are among the conditions Weinstein "suffers from on a daily basis." Weinstein has been in prison since 2020.
In 2020 he was sentenced to 23 years in prison and launched a global #MeToo movement against him – but in April it was overturned by the state's highest court. The judges ruled that the original hearing was prejudiced by "serious" improper decisions, including a decision to allow the women to testify on charges that were not part of the case, violating Weinstein's right to a fair trial.
Weinstein has remained in prison because he was also convicted in Los Angeles in 2022 of another rape, for which he was sentenced to 16 years in prison. He also appealed against this sentence. Weinstein has denied that he raped or sexually assaulted anyone. Weinstein has been accused of sexual harassment by over 100 women.
