A statement by the famous singer, Rovena Dilo, has caused a stir online, where she says: "If you listen to Albanian rap, 50% become criminals, this is the inspiration it gives. Music should be a nourishing, inspiring and beautifying tool, where does this lead? This genre is very provocative. What inspires a rapper: to take a Kalashnikov and kill, or to throw champagne at your head?".
Artist manager and talent recruiter, Rea Shena, was asked on "Live From Tirana" "does rap music make you a criminal?"
"I have a lot of respect for Rovena as an artist, but rap music worldwide, it had its beginnings there, from the ghettos of America. That was the origin, the groups that fought each other, they talked about drugs, about violence, about women, about cars... This thing grew rap. Maybe they were a little more romantic in the way they wrote and now they have become a little more streetwise and the level of rap lyricists has dropped. But we also have very good rappers like Kendrick Lamar, who if you read his lyrics, has a very high level of intellect. This is something that is studied as a topic even in art schools, that rap and rap lyrics push people to have a different lifestyle, maybe a little violent. But this does not mean that everyone who listens to rap music is a criminal. I listen to rap from Monday to Sunday and I'm still a good person (laughs)."
