Former MP Dashamir Shehi has raised strong concerns about the state of democracy and the functioning of the opposition in the country.
Invited to the "Off the Record" show on A2CNN, Shehi said that Albania risks slipping into the models of undemocratic countries like Belarus.
" I fear we are reaching the level of Belarus, Azerbaijan or Russia. There is no real rotation of power there and protests are almost negligible ," he said, stressing that this is also related to the country's post-communist legacy.
According to Shehi, one of the main problems remains the lack of inspiration and renewal within the opposition.
" The opposition no longer inspires, because it's the same people. You can't seek support by coming back for the third or fourth time with the same group and the same ideas ," he said.
He emphasized that to win the elections, the opposition must produce new leadership and new political alternatives.
" If the opposition will bring new figures and new theses, I am convinced that it can win the next elections. But if this remains a clash of 'businesses', then the government has the advantage of power and resources ," declared Shehi.
The head of the LZHK also focused on the political and electoral system in the country, recalling that it is a product of previous agreements between political parties.
" The 2008 agreement produced this constitution, this electoral system and this administrative division. This is a system they built themselves and now they have to face its consequences ," Shehi concluded.
