Horror films have historically been overlooked by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, known as the Oscars, but that could change this year. When the nominations for the 98th Academy Awards are announced, director Ryan Coogler's vampire tale "Sinners" is expected to be one of the biggest surprises of the ceremony.
The nominations will be read out on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. CET by actors Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman. The broadcast will be broadcast live on Oscar.com, Oscars.org, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' digital platforms, and on ABC's "Good Morning America."
To date, no film has achieved more than 14 Oscar nominations, a record held by “All About Eve,” “Titanic,” and “La La Land.” However, “Sinners” is seen as a serious candidate to break that mark, thanks to expected nominations in the technical, screenplay, and directing categories, as well as for the performance of Michael B. Jordan, who could receive his first Oscar nomination.
Another big favorite of the season is Paul Thomas Anderson's "One Battle After Another." The comedy about the relationship between a father and his revolutionary daughter has made it through awards season without major setbacks and could secure as many as 14 nominations, including five or six in the acting categories.
Regardless of the final nomination tally, Warner Bros. is on pace to achieve its best performance in its 102-year Oscar history. Both films, “Sinners” and “One Battle After Another,” are expected to bring the studio a record number of nominations, at a crucial moment as the company prepares for its sale to Netflix.
Earlier in the week, Netflix upgraded its $72 billion bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, presenting an all-cash offer that is seen as more attractive than Paramount Skydance's competing one.
Meanwhile, this year the Oscars are introducing a new category for the selection of actors, which is expected to further favor the films "Sinners" and "One Battle After Another", increasing their chances for an even greater number of nominations.
Ten productions will be nominated in the Best Picture competition. In addition to the two main favorites, the list is also expected to include Norwegian family drama "Sentimental Value", Shakespearean drama "Hamnet" and sports drama "Marty Supreme".
