If today, we do not preserve the naturalness of a child, that sincere laughter, that instinctive trust, that immaculate light, then don't be surprised tomorrow when the world becomes harsher.
Today, when spring innocently knocks softly and the air carries the scent of a new beginning, my heart cannot stop at just the blossoming trees. It goes somewhere else. It goes to the children.
These days, on the Sanremo stage, Ermal Meta's voice brought a lullaby that seemed soft as moonlight, 'Stella Stellina'. But beneath that softness pulsed a painful truth: the smiles of children are fading prematurely. And today, most people talk about everything but that!
I myself do not want to take sides, nor enter the noisy camps of opinion.
I just want to say something that is older than any ideology:
Children are not a battlefield. They are the beginning of life.
When a child grows up in fear, with sirens, with screams, with guns opening fire in places where they should be playing, dreaming, learning, then something very deep has broken within us as a society.
We saw it recently in Iran, where someone, in a cold move, decided to open fire on a place that was supposed to be a haven for growth. How easily such a decision is made, but how long the shadow it leaves on a child's soul!
I am a professor. I have seen eyes that light up when they understand something for the first time. I have seen smiles that arise from a right sentence or action, from a sense of security. Just as I have seen the premature fatigue in the eyes of young people, who carry more than they need on their shoulders!
Spring is not just a cycle of nature. It is memory and care. It reminds us that every new sprout needs care and protection. That every little life needs space to blossom.
If today, we do not preserve the naturalness of a child, that sincere laughter, that instinctive trust, that immaculate light, then don't be surprised tomorrow when the world becomes harsher.
We really hope that this spring will not be just another season that comes and goes. Let it be an important turning point in human nature - let's talk less about positions and take more care of children, because I repeat, every smile saved today is a possible peace tomorrow.
Let us make this season a song of life, not only with beautiful notes, but with a sense of responsibility.
May this spring, darkened by the smoke of the strikes in the Middle East, be the last to begin as such. The parental conscience and obligation of every child born and those to come is to preserve the spring spirit of the blossoming of nature and life.
Let's be content with preserving just one sound: that of a schoolyard in spring, filled with fearless voices, playful footsteps, and endless laughter.
If we preserve this sound, something essential has remained with us.
