An Albanian, who was a member of a "hawk" gang in Italy, has been arrested by the Carabinieri in the Turin region.
He was chased and beaten by citizens after a burglary in a house in Arnad, Aosta, taking at least 5 thousand euros of goods, mainly gold jewelry and valuables.
The residents also hit him with a pickaxe, causing injuries.
"TGR Valle d'Aosta" reported that the 40-year-old's arrest has been confirmed and his crime has already been proven, as the Court left him in prison.
When the carabinieri arrived at the scene, they found the Albanian injured.
They called emergency medical services, where the immigrant was diagnosed with a pelvic fracture caused by a fall while trying to climb over a private fence, but also by being hit by residents.
The judge has ruled that the immigrant must remain in prison and will be transferred there after he is released from the hospital ward where he is still being treated.
The Albanian exercised his right to remain silent, stating only that he was a chef in Albania. The speedy trial is scheduled for December 19.
The Carabinieri reported that "at the time of his arrest, he was found with 500 euros in cash, a luxury handbag and valuable objects, with a total stolen value of approximately 5 thousand euros."
According to those leading the investigation, “this is not a deliberate theft, but one of many attempts to attack homes in the area.” The forced entry appears to have occurred through a screen door that had been torn open.
For this reason, the charge is aggravated theft, which carries a sentence of 4 to 7 years in prison, Italian media reports.
But due to his clean criminal record, as he has no precedents, the Albanian can get away with less than 4 years of sentence, house arrest and a ban on staying in the Aosta Valley.
There is no trace of the accomplices, one or perhaps two, who escaped. Investigations into them are still ongoing.
