The murder of 58-year-old Albanian, Fatos Cenaj, in Italy has been solved. Cenaj was shot in the head on June 8th.
The body of the victim, a former prison guard, was found on a rural road in Fontanaviva, in the province of Padua, just a few hundred meters from the apartment where he lived with his family.
After almost six months of investigation, on December 13, the Carabinieri arrested his neighbor, Moreno Violetto, 45, a local worker, who is now accused of murder. The arrest came after a detailed investigation carried out by the Padua Police, in collaboration with the Carabinieri of Cittadella and the RIS special unit from Parma.
Investigators were able to identify the suspect through analysis of video footage from the morning of the crime. The video shows a lone cyclist, dressed unusually for a summer day: wearing a helmet, sunglasses, a respirator mask, and sleeves that appeared to be tattoos on both arms. Further analysis revealed that the tattoos were fake, made with artificial sleeves.
Following the trail of the mask and tattooed sleeves, the carabinieri discovered that these items had been purchased on Amazon by the victim's neighbor. According to the investigation, the 45-year-old had also purchased paint to change the color of his bicycle, as well as materials for the artisanal production of firearms and ammunition.
During a search conducted in July, authorities seized his bicycle, while homemade bullets, some of which had been previously fired for testing, were also found in a warehouse near his home.
RIS confirmed the match between the remains of the firearm that hit Cenaj and the traces found on the suspect's bicycle.
Fatos Cenaj had previously served in the prison police in Albania and then moved to Italy to join his family, who had bought a house in Fontanaviva. His past was considered clean, while relations with his neighbor had been tense, but limited to minor arguments.
After the crime and the long investigation, the 45-year-old from Padua is now detained in the "Due Palazzi" prison, where he faces charges of aggravated murder.
