About 200 Russian soldiers were secretly trained in China in late 2025 and some of them later returned to the front lines of the war in Ukraine, Reuters reported, citing three European intelligence agencies and documents obtained by this media outlet.
According to the report, the training took place at Chinese military bases in Beijing and the eastern city of Nanjing, under a bilateral Russian-Chinese agreement signed on July 2, 2025 by senior military officials from the two countries.
Documents reviewed by Reuters show that the training program focused primarily on the use of drones, electronic warfare, military aviation and armored infantry operations. The agreement also provided for training of Chinese troops in Russia.
European intelligence sources said that some of the Russian soldiers trained in China were later identified in combat drone operations in the occupied regions of Crimea and Zaporizhia. According to them, among the participants were Russian military instructors with ranks from sergeant to lieutenant colonel.
Reuters reported that the training included the use of flight simulators, FPV drones, electronic warfare weapons against drones and systems for neutralizing them with special nets. One of the internal Russian reports also mentions training in the use of coordinated mortars with unmanned aerial vehicles.
The defense ministries of Russia and China did not respond to Reuters requests for comment on the details of the report.
On the other hand, the Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that Beijing "has consistently maintained an objective and impartial stance on the crisis in Ukraine" and that China continues to support peace talks.
The news comes on the eve of Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to Beijing, where he is expected to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping, while relations between the two countries have deepened significantly since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
