Sokratis Famellos announced his resignation from the post of chairman of SYRIZA – Progressive Alliance through a recorded message published on YouTube.
The resignation comes at the height of a tense climate of internal division in the party, which has escalated significantly in recent days, putting SYRIZA headquarters in an extraordinary situation ahead of the important Central Committee meeting on July 11. The minority within the party proposes that SYRIZA run alone in the upcoming elections.
In his message, Famellos recalled that he took over the leadership of the party during its most difficult period, with two main objectives: to transform SYRIZA into a serious, collective and left-wing party, and to build a united progressive front for the parliamentary elections.
He listed the achievements during his mandate, mentioning parliamentary work, the organization of the congress, the renewal of leadership structures, the improvement of the party's finances, and initiatives to unite progressive forces.
Famellos emphasized that he has constantly fought for the unity of the left without personal ambition and that he believes in the values of solidarity and collective action.
According to him, efforts to cooperate with PASOK and the "New Left" formation did not find support, while the creation of the ELAS movement after the departure of Alexis Tsipras significantly changed the political landscape of the left.
He also accused some SYRIZA leaders of undermining the party's collective decisions from the beginning and working towards its electoral isolation, repeating, according to him, the same mistakes that led to the party's downfall in 2023.
"Until today I did everything possible to avoid this division in the left camp. I cannot support another political project. Therefore, I resign from the leadership of SYRIZA - Progressive Alliance," he declared.
Famellos clarified that he will not give up his mandate as an MP nor his membership in SYRIZA. He emphasized that his resignation has only one political message: the left must serve unity to defeat the right and prevent further divisions.
