Italy's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, held a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi, which focused on the situation in Iran and tensions in the Middle East.
" I wanted to give an update on the conflict in Iran and the situation in the region ," Tajani wrote on the X platform.
He stressed Italy's concern about the rise in tensions, underlining the need to avoid further escalation and to intensify efforts to achieve a ceasefire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
According to him, these steps are necessary to prevent negative consequences on food security and stability, especially in Africa.
Tajani also stressed that for Italy the development of an Iranian nuclear program for military purposes constitutes a "red line", warning of the risk of a new arms race in the region.
He added that Iran should use its influence over Hezbollah to stop attacks on Israel and achieve peace in Lebanon through negotiations.
In conclusion, Tajani stressed Italy's commitment to supporting every international effort for peace, keeping channels of dialogue open and promoting stability in the Middle East.
