The United States House of Representatives has again approved a resolution calling for an end to US military involvement in the conflict with Iran, at a time when tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate.
The resolution, led by Democrats, passed by a vote of 214 to 208, with four Republicans joining the opposition. It is the second time the House has narrowly supported a measure aimed at limiting the continuation of the conflict.
However, the resolution is largely political and symbolic. It is not being sent to President Donald Trump for signature, and even if it were to become a binding law, the president would be expected to veto any measure that would limit his powers as commander-in-chief.
Despite this, the vote result is considered an important political signal, as it shows that support for the Trump administration on Capitol Hill is weakening as the conflict with Iran continues.
According to published data, the war has cost American taxpayers at least $37.5 billion so far. The conflict has killed 18 American soldiers and injured more than 450 others, while thousands of casualties have been reported in Iran.
Meanwhile, the escalation of hostilities in the Strait of Hormuz has again put pressure on international energy markets, pushing up global oil prices and fuel costs ahead of the midterm elections in the United States.
