The Italian Interior Minister defends the project and says that 50 million euros have been spent in 2025 from the maximum annual fund of 134 million...

"In the first five months of this year, irregular arrivals have decreased by 54% compared to the consolidated data of last year, which itself had recorded a decrease of 60% compared to the period when we took office . "

Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, during the Economy Festival in Trento, presented the figures related to the fight against illegal immigration during this government's mandate, saying that they prove the results achieved, despite various efforts to hinder control policies.

He added that "we are continuing our commitment to making the repatriation process more efficient. We have increased the ratio between repatriations and irregular arrivals from 10.2% to 34%. This is the result of the work we are doing and of the very important international relations . "

According to Piantedos, the Italian approach to immigration has become a European approach over the years, despite criticism of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for alleged international isolation. He said this is also evidenced by the new European Pact on Migration, which, according to him, confirms and strengthens the Albanian model.

The Italian project in Albania, the minister said, has been opposed from the beginning, but is showing that it is an effective instrument that is being taken as an example by other European countries.

" It is an innovative operation that will characterize our future. The expenses have been made mainly for investments, even before the management of the structures. The police personnel engaged in the center are 200 units and not 500 ," he declared, also referring to the entry into force of European regulations.

The minister also responded to critics who have spoken in recent months and years about the misuse of funds and the failure of the project. "In 2025, 50 million euros were spent on the Repatriation Center in Albania. The fund foreseen in the budget has a maximum annual coverage of 134 million euros. We have repatriated 84 people, among them convicted of murder, sexual violence against minors, theft and drug trafficking," said Piantedosi.

He compared this operation to the "Mare Nostrum" mission, which he stated "brought 500,000 people to Italy in three years, of whom 70-80% were not entitled to international protection" , adding that the operation had "a cost of 8 billion lire: 110 million were spent in one year".

"Would it be better to spend 50 million euros to repatriate 84 dangerous people or allow hundreds of thousands of people to enter without permission who then cost our reception system billions of euros?" the minister asked, describing this as a rhetorical question.

Piantedosi stressed that immigration "is and should be above all an opportunity" , but warned that "denying the fact that it can also be a problem that requires management and complexity means carrying out an ideological operation that takes us nowhere" . /Pamphlet/
