Increased controls in Lake Ohrid, ban on koran fishing during the breeding

The Border Police, in cooperation with the Public Order Police and the Fishing Organization in Pogradec, has intensified controls to enforce the ban on koran fishing during the months of December and January, a period that coincides with the breeding of this characteristic fish of Lake Ohrid.

According to the authorities, only sporadic cases of illegal fishing have been found during inspections conducted this year. For violators, penalties range from administrative fines to criminal prosecution, depending on the violation found.

Throughout December, fishing boats in the city of Pogradec have been seen capsized on the lakeshore, an indication that the ban on koran fishing is being respected. This ban is enforced every year during the months of December and January, as this period is crucial for the breeding cycle of this fish, whose natural habitat is Lake Ohrid.

Unlike previous years, this year compliance with the ban appears to be higher, as a result of increased awareness among fishermen, but also of punitive measures. This situation is also confirmed by joint controls carried out with the Pogradec Fisheries Organization.

The fishing ban has also affected the local market, where there is currently a reported shortage of freshly caught koran for sale.

Meanwhile, during this period, about 70 fishermen are authorized to collect koran eggs. The eggs are treated in the Lini incubator and then, during the fall, are released back into the lake in the form of small korans, as part of the process of repopulation and preservation of the Lake Ohrid ecosystem.
