Iran under attack, Bahrain Formula 1 race canceled; Pirelli personnel evacuated

The military attack on Iran, launched in the early hours of the morning, has also had consequences for sporting activities in the Middle East. A two-day tire test scheduled for the Sakhir circuit in Bahrain has been canceled for security reasons, directly affecting Pirelli personnel as well as the Formula 1 teams Mercedes and McLaren.

The decision to cancel the test came after the situation in the region escalated. Pirelli had planned two days of work on the track to develop new tire compounds for wet conditions, but the activity was stopped and all personnel returned to their hotels.

In an official statement, the Milanese company announced that “the two days of development testing for wet tire compounds, scheduled for today and tomorrow, have been canceled for safety reasons, following the development of the international situation.” According to the announcement, all Pirelli personnel currently in Manama are safe in hotels, while the company is working to ensure their return to Italy and the United Kingdom as soon as possible. A similar procedure has been followed for members of Mercedes and McLaren.

Meanwhile, the security situation in Bahrain has been tense. According to local authorities, explosions have been recorded near the US base located in the country. In the capital Manama, authorities ordered the immediate evacuation of a residential neighborhood after a rocket attack.

In a joint statement, the Ministry of Interior and the Supreme Command of the Kingdom of Bahrain's Defense Forces announced that a ballistic missile, partially intercepted by air defenses, caused fragments to fall in a residential area of the Al Juffair district or surrounding areas, according to preliminary reconstructions.

Damage to civilian buildings, localized fires, and partial collapse of several structures have been reported as a result of the incident. So far, authorities have not officially attributed responsibility for the attack.

The developments come amid heightened tensions in the Persian Gulf. Iran's announcements of missile operations against US bases and interests it describes as "hostile," as well as reports of missile interceptions in the United Arab Emirates with civilian casualties and other alleged attacks in the region, link the incident to the current escalation between Iran and its adversaries.

However, until an official confirmation on the authorship of the attack in Bahrain, the connection remains within the framework of the regional context and recent developments.
