The Hague Prosecutor's Office has made a clarification, saying that the special prosecutor's words were poorly translated into Albanian.
According to the Prosecutor's Office in The Hague, the prosecutor has requested 45 years in prison for each former KLA commander. So, a total of 180 years in prison have been requested.
"We are seeking the conviction of specific individuals, so we are not seeking a conviction for the General Staff, but for specific individuals. The SPO is seeking a guilty verdict for all counts of the indictment with a single sentence of 45 years based on the individual contributions of the crimes committed or perpetrated by each of the individuals: Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi. These crimes are war crimes and crimes against humanity and are serious crimes and these charges have not lost their value over time, they continue to be very serious," said West.

“The facts of this case and the applicable law support a lengthy prison sentence for each of the defendants. A full explanation of the relevant factual and legal considerations is set out in the Prosecution’s final memorandum, and I will not repeat all of the factors here. While my colleagues will shortly highlight certain evidence in their presentations and respond to some of the Defence’s arguments, we stand by our memorandum which sets out our case more broadly. However, it is important that the SPO’s position is clearly understood – a conviction and a verdict are not sought against the General Staff or the KLA. Likewise, no conviction is sought, and no verdict can be entered, solely on the basis of membership in the General Staff or the KLA,” he said, quoting prosecutor Kimberly West in the courtroom.
While the chief prosecutor was expressing the request for the punishment of the former KLA leaders, the same were caught on camera. First Krasniqi and Veseli, and then Thaçi and Selimi, who are seen with frowning faces.
Former President Hashim Thaçi, former Speakers of Parliament Kadri Veseli and Jakup Krasniqi, and former Chief of the Vetëvendosje MPs, Rexhep Selimi, are accused of joint criminal enterprise in connection with war crimes and crimes against humanity. Based on the indictment of the ZPS, published in February 2023, Thaçi, Veseli, Krasniqi and Selimi are accused of joint criminal enterprise in connection with about 100 murders, then for torture and cruel treatment in about 40 detention centers during the period 1998-1999.
