Former Italian goalkeeper Federico Marchetti has publicly recounted the most difficult periods of his life and career, talking about dealing with depression, psychological pressure in football and experiences that he describes as disguised mobbing at several clubs.
Marketi has revealed that depression had led him to a serious psychological state, to the point where he could not even jump to receive the ball during matches. He emphasizes that faith has been a decisive factor in helping him cope with the most critical moments, mentioning also a serious accident he suffered at the age of 20.
During his time at Cagliari, after participating in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where he played two matches for Italy, Marchetti says he faced pressure and isolation from the club. According to him, it all started after rumors spread that he wanted to play in the Champions League. The then president, Massimo Cellino, rejected every transfer offer, including those from Roma and Milan, plunging the goalkeeper into a long and tiring psychological conflict.
Marquette says the club disguised his depression as a physical injury, leaving him sidelined and without support at a time when he needed help the most. He stresses that depression is a serious illness and should not be treated as a weakness.
After a year without playing, he moved to Lazio, where he experienced one of the best moments of his career, winning the Coppa Italia in 2013, after the final against Roma, a success he calls "magical". However, even at Lazio, after several positive seasons, he lost his place in the lineup and was left out of the team.
Marketi explains that the environment in Rome is very difficult for players, as even a single mistake can be accompanied by harsh criticism and rumors about his personal life, which he denies.
His last stint at Genoa, where he moved in 2018, was also fraught with disappointment. Marchetti has described former coach Aleksander Blesi as the worst coach he has had, accusing him of humiliating treatment and constant insults towards players, especially Italian ones. He also mentions other cases where players such as Riccardo Calafiori and Goran Pandev left due to this treatment.
