FIFA has officially confirmed to BBC Sport that there will be no disciplinary action against Argentine midfielder Leandro Paredes, following the major clash that occurred immediately after the end of the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina.
Argentina were defeated 1-0 after extra time by Spain at the New York/New Jersey Stadium, and the excitement of the final turned to chaos after referee Slavko Vinčić blew the final whistle. Players from both teams were involved in a massive brawl, with Paredes the main protagonist.
The Argentine midfielder was seen physically clashing with Spanish defender Erik Garcia, pushing him and grabbing him by the throat. Meanwhile, Gavi stepped in to protect his teammate, but ended up falling to the ground after Paredes tackled him.
Initially, FIFA's official commentator information system reported that Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić had shown Paredes a red card for his involvement in the altercation. However, this information was later removed from the official match report, creating confusion over what had actually happened.
There was no red card cancelled.
BBC Sport journalist Dale Johnson clarified that it was not a cancelled red card, as Paredes was never officially sent off.
According to him, the initial reporting in the FIFA system was incorrect and was later corrected by removing it from the official match documentation.
FIFA has not given a public explanation for this change, but the confirmation that there will be no disciplinary proceedings against Paredes has closed the matter for the midfielder on a personal level.
Numerous criticisms of the players' behavior
The brawl after the final sparked a backlash from former footballers. According to reports, Zlatan Ibrahimovic harshly criticized Paredes' behavior, calling it unprofessional.
Even former football stars like Wayne Rooney and Alan Shearer reacted against the violent scenes shown at the end of the final.
Other Argentine players were also involved in the incident. Nahuel Molina was seen hitting Rodri, who was later named the tournament's best player.
FIFA investigates Argentina
Although Paredes will not be punished individually, FIFA has launched an investigation into the general conduct of the Argentine national team after the match.
FIFA's Disciplinary Committee has appointed a prosecutor for disciplinary and ethical matters to investigate the events following the final. The investigation could also involve the Argentine Football Association (AFA).
According to the FIFA Disciplinary Code, involvement in physical altercations can result in suspensions of at least three matches for a national team.
It remains unclear whether FIFA will also examine the way the referee handled the situation during and after the on-field conflict.
