The 2026 World Cup ended with Spain triumphing, lifting the trophy at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey and winning their second star in history. The 26 players selected by coach Luis de la Fuente have already made history for La Roja, thanks to an extraordinary tournament.
One of the champions' strongest weapons was undoubtedly their defence. Spain conceded only one goal throughout the competition, with the central defence duo of Aymeric Laporte and Pau Kubarsi playing a crucial role in the team's success.
However, FIFA's selection of the ideal team of the tournament has caused controversy. As with every World Cup, fans have the opportunity to vote for the best team of the competition, but Laporte and Kubarsi are missing from the list of candidates.
The absence of Kubars, who was named the best young player of the World Cup, is particularly surprising. Instead of the two champion center-backs, Mark Kukureja and Pedro Porro have been included, while the list of defenders is completed by Lisandro Martinez, Nuno Mendes, Virgil van Dijk, Gabriel Magalhaes, Cristian "Kuti" Romero and Dajot Upamecano.
In goal, candidates include Unai Simon, Vozinja, Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez, Jordan Pickford and Rum.
The midfield and winger department includes Rodri and Lamin Jamal from Spain, as well as Jude Bellingham, Michael Oliseh, Vinicius Junior, Enzo Fernandez, Osmane Dembele, Luka Modric and Ismael Saibari.
Meanwhile, Mikel Ojarzabal, Kylian Mbappe, Quinones, Harry Kane, Erling Haaland and Lionel Messi have been selected in attack.
In Spain, the absence of Laporte and Kubarsi was considered incomprehensible, given that they formed the most solid defense of the tournament. Also left out of the list are Dani Olmo and Mikel Merino, two players who made an important contribution to Spain's journey to the world title. This selection by FIFA has sparked numerous reactions, with many fans considering it unjustifiable to leave out the two center-backs who dominated throughout the World Cup.
