Following the defeat to Spain in the World Cup final, Lionel Scaloni announced that he would step down as Argentina coach at the end of this calendar year. Immediately following this announcement, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) has begun work to identify a coach to take over the reigns of the world champions.
According to Argentine media, the list of candidates includes four well-known names. The main target of the AFA leaders and the dream of the fans remains Diego Simeone. However, the return of "El Cholo" to the helm of Argentina is considered very difficult. In addition to his long-term commitment with Atletico Madrid, a major obstacle is the hefty contract that makes him the highest-paid coach in world football.
The main favorite to replace Scaloni is Marcelo Gallardo. The former River Plate coach is currently free and is seen as the ideal candidate to take over at the Albiceleste.
Mauricio Pochettino and Pablo Aimar are also on the AFA's list. Pochettino is expected to continue his project at the helm of the United States national team until 2030, while Aimar, currently Scaloni's assistant, remains an internal alternative for the Argentina bench.
