United States President Donald Trump has executed a payment of more than $5.6 million to writer E. Jean Carroll, following a court ruling that found him liable in a civil suit for sexual abuse and defamation.
The news was confirmed by Carroll's attorney, Roberta Kaplan, who announced that her client has already received the full amount, which includes the damages awarded by the jury and interest accrued during the appeal period.
"We are pleased to announce that she has received the payment awarded by the jury as a result of this verdict ," Kaplan said.
Trump had sought a stay of execution of the payment, with the intention of taking the case to the U.S. Supreme Court. However, the judge handling the case last week ordered the release of the funds, paving the way for the financial proceedings to be concluded.
On the other hand, the US president's legal representatives have not given any public reaction regarding the latest development.
The case involves allegations by E. Jean Carroll, a former columnist who claims Trump sexually assaulted her in the mid-1990s in a fitting room at the Bergdorf Goodman luxury department store in Manhattan. She later filed a defamation lawsuit after Trump publicly denied the allegations on his Truth Social platform.
In 2023, a federal jury in New York ruled in Carroll's favor, awarding him $5 million in damages. Throughout the process, Trump continued to deny the charges, and the funds awarded by the court remained blocked pending the conclusion of the appeal proceedings.
