Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti has assessed as necessary an agreement with the opposition on the election of the president, as according to him, new elections are unnecessary. He stressed that today he will send an invitation to the leaders of the opposition parties to meet at the beginning of next week, in order to discuss the issue of the President.
" Emphasis should be placed on the fact that last year we had four elections and I am convinced that we should not repeat that in 2025. 2026 is a new year, it is neither right nor beneficial to have repeated elections. Therefore, it is necessary to have an agreement with the opposition parties on the election of the president. The citizens of the Republic expect institutional stability from us and not repeated elections, therefore, there is no need for repeated elections; there is a need for us to have the Constitutional Court's verdict as soon as possible and for the Assembly to start working ," Kurti stressed.
He added that it is necessary to make the Assembly functional as soon as possible and not to go through unnecessary new elections.
" Since over 120 million euros of various international agreements have been delayed due to the fact that the Assembly of the Republic is not working, and on the other hand, new elections will cost at least 10 million euros. It is not a question now of who has the majority. LVV has won with 51.1 percent and the issue is the quorum of 81 deputies, and I do not believe that we need new elections to have a competition to see if we are reaching 80 deputies ," Kurti declared.
A day after the assembly failed to elect a new president, Osmani issued a decree dissolving the assembly. Her decree was challenged by the ruling Vetëvendosje Movement, which has taken it to the Constitutional Court for review. The court has suspended the decree and the work of the assembly until March 31, pending a decision.
