New details have emerged regarding yesterday's operation in Italy that dismantled an Italian-Albanian drug trafficking group. It is learned that nine precautionary measures were executed this morning in the provinces of Florence and Siena, as part of an investigation coordinated by the Florence Public Prosecutor's Office - Antimafia District Directorate. The security measures include eight pre-trial detentions and one house arrest against members of the criminal organization.
The operation was carried out by officers of the Florence Provincial Command of the Guardia di Finanza, Economic and Financial Police Unit, with the support of the Central Service for the Investigation of Organized Crime (SCICO). The suspects are accused, to varying degrees, of the crimes of conspiracy with the aim of illicit drug trafficking and production, trafficking and possession of narcotics.
The investigation began with the seizure of 20 kilograms of cocaine in April 2023 in San Gimignano, which led to the arrest of an Italian and an Albanian national. Subsequent investigations led to the identification of a larger criminal network, believed to be new and independent of other known organizations, with operational bases in Tuscany and supply channels in Lombardy.
According to investigators, the syndicate had a family structure, extensive internal security measures and used modern encrypted communication systems. The leaders, two Albanian nationals residing between Castelfiorentino and Colle Val d'Elsa, are suspected of managing the strategies, supplies, storage locations, prices and destinations of drug shipments, using trusted contacts, couriers and "guardians".
Some of the suspects were officially employed as drivers for freight transport companies and allegedly used this activity to forge shipments, hiding the drugs in bags bearing the logo of a well-known international transport company.
Between 2023 and 2024, a total of 17 kilograms of cocaine, 18 kilograms of hashish and one kilogram of marijuana were seized in Castelfiorentino, Colle Val d'Elsa and Busto Arsizio, with three arrests. Further investigations are underway in the same provinces. The order was issued during the preliminary investigation phase and the suspects are presumed innocent until a final decision is made.
