An Albanian carries an average of 117 euros in cash in their pocket. The figure refers to a report by the Austrian central bank, which calculates how many euros a citizen in Eastern European countries holds in their wallet.
In 2019, a local resident held an average of 126 euros in cash; in 2022, the value was 149 euros, while 2 years later this amount of money decreased again, as the European currency lost points in our market.
For comparison, in Bulgaria the wallet of a local resident holds 119 euros, in Romania 140, in Bosnia 188 and in Serbia 412 euros.
But while the amount of euros has decreased, the opposite has happened to the number of residents holding them. In 2024, 35% of Albanians carried euros in their pockets, up from 30% in 2022. For the Austrian Bank, the reasons for holding and using the Euro in these values are related to the use of the currency for ordinary purchases or savings.
For nearly 5 years, in Albania the Euro has depreciated by about 25% in the foreign exchange market, affecting the financial behavior of citizens.
The latter believe that the European currency will stabilize in the next 5 years.
