The American president promises support for Lebanon, while warning that the US is ready to react to any new escalation in the Red Sea.
United States President Donald Trump warned that Washington would respond if Houthi rebels launched new attacks in the region, following the Iran-backed group's decision to declare a naval blockade on Saudi ships.
The statement was made during a meeting at the White House with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, who is wrapping up a four-day visit to Washington focused on the country's stability after months of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.
" If something like that happens, we'll deal with it. We've acted against the Houthis before and we haven't heard from them since, " Trump told reporters.
The US president added that Lebanon has suffered for decades and that the US will support the country in the coming period.
" Lebanon has been treated very badly for many years. We will make sure it is treated with the respect it deserves ," Trump declared.
The US president's warning comes after the Houthi group in Yemen announced a naval blockade of Saudi ships, a move that increases tensions in the Middle East and raises concerns about the security of one of the world's most important maritime corridors.
The Houthis, allies of Iran, have long threatened to block the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, the entry point to the Suez Canal and a strategic artery for international trade.
About 15% of global maritime trade passes through the strait, and shipping disruptions during 2023–2025 are estimated to have caused economic losses of about $20 billion per year. Bab al-Mandeb also remains a key route for oil exports from Saudi Arabia, the world's largest exporter of crude oil.
