Hungarian prosecutors have raided the headquarters of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's opposition Fidesz party, in an operation that marks a significant development in the country's political scene.
According to Fidesz, prosecutors searched the party's servers and communication systems, seeking access to databases. Orbán's party called the intrusion "unprecedented" and accused the new government of using justice against the opposition.
However, according to Reuters, the raid is linked to a criminal investigation into suspected misuse of funds from the National Fund for Culture (NKA). The investigation involves decisions to distribute more than 17 billion forints (about $54 million) in state grants, which are allegedly non-transparently directed towards artists and organizations close to Fidesz. The people under investigation have denied any wrongdoing.
This is one of the most significant actions by the authorities since Prime Minister Péter Magyar came to power, who built his election campaign on the promise of fighting corruption and strengthening the rule of law after the years of Viktor Orbán's rule.
Magyar himself reacted briefly, stating that he awaits official information from the prosecution about the nature of the investigation and the materials seized during the operation.
Meanwhile, French far-right leader Marine Le Pen condemned the raid, calling it a violation of the rule of law and accusing the Hungarian government of pressuring the opposition.
So far, the Hungarian Prosecutor's Office has not released a full statement on the operation. According to Reuters, the search is related to investigations into public funds, while Fidesz's claims that it is a political attack remain the party's own position.
