Spain and France continue to battle massive forest fires, while a heatwave continues to grip southern Europe. At the same time, several countries in the Western Balkans have been hit by severe hailstorms after days of extreme temperatures.
According to Reuters, Spanish firefighters continue operations to extinguish active fires, while authorities maintain the risk of fires breaking out at very high in most of the country. However, the situation in the province of Guadalajara, in central Spain, has improved, allowing some residents to return to their homes.
In France, the situation remains grave after the tragedy that occurred on Tuesday in the southwestern region of Gironde, where two firefighters lost their lives after their vehicle was engulfed in flames.
French authorities have urged citizens to avoid using barbecues and any activities that could cause fires in areas affected by high temperatures.
"Nine out of ten fires start as a result of human activity, whether accidentally or intentionally," French authorities were quoted as saying, according to Reuters.
Meanwhile, in the Western Balkans, the weather has taken a sharp turn. After a heat wave, the region has been hit by hailstorms, which have caused injuries in North Macedonia and eastern Kosovo.
Scientists continue to warn that Europe is the fastest-warming continent in the world. According to them, climate change caused by human activity is increasing the intensity and frequency of heat waves, droughts and forest fires, while also creating conditions for increasingly powerful and unpredictable storms.
