New British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has introduced another measure to ease the burden of the cost of living, by setting a maximum limit of 2 pounds on bus tickets, which will come into effect from January next year.
According to the British government, the new scheme will reduce the price of bus travel by up to a third, with the aim of making public transport more affordable for millions of citizens.
The measure will be made available with £454 million. The funding will be secured through a review of public spending priorities as part of the Burnham government's new economic package.
"Good and affordable transport links are essential. No one should be left behind because they can't afford to travel. The £2 cap on bus tickets will give citizens more breathing space in the face of the cost of living," said Prime Minister Andy Burnham.
The announcement comes just a day after the new British government announced the removal of VAT from household electricity bills, a measure expected to come into effect on October 1. Its cost will be covered by the cancellation of the digital identity project, worth 1.8 billion pounds.
Burnham has announced that this will not be the last measure. According to him, the government will also introduce other initiatives in the coming days, with a focus on supporting families and citizens with lower incomes, in an effort to mitigate the impact of the high cost of living.
