US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, General Dan Caine, will report to the US Senate on President Donald Trump's administration's strategy in the conflict with Iran, where they are also expected to request approval for additional funds.

According to reports, the Pentagon is seeking about $80 billion to cover the costs of military operations and replenish weapons stocks, which have been reduced as a result of the conflict.

Fighting resumed on July 8, after a ceasefire between Washington and Tehran failed, leading to a new escalation of the situation and losses for American forces.

An Iranian attack on a US military base in Jordan has killed two American soldiers and left another missing, US officials said, in what was the fourth attack on US forces in the region in five days.

US officials estimate that Iran continues to have significant missile capabilities and has improved its ability to evade US air defense systems. The attacks also injured dozens of military personnel and damaged several helicopters.

Meanwhile, the US administration is considering expanding military operations, including strikes on Iran's underground nuclear facilities, bridges and energy infrastructure. Such a move is expected to spark debate in Congress over the legal basis for the operations.

Another key issue remains the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. Its closure has contributed to the increase in fuel prices in international markets, while it remains unclear whether the US can guarantee the restoration of free navigation without the commitment of ground forces.

The US Senate is expected to decide whether to approve the additional funds, at a time when questions are growing about the strategy, cost and duration of the conflict.
