US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth sharply criticized European immigration policies during a speech in Normandy, where commemorative ceremonies were held for the 82nd anniversary of the Allied Landings during World War II.
Speaking in France, Hegseth said that some European beaches are facing a new "invasion" today, referring to the arrival of migrants on the shores of Spain, Italy, Greece and Bulgaria.
" Unfortunately, today other European beaches are being attacked by different and dangerous ideologies. Boats and people are arriving in Spain, Italy, Greece and Bulgaria. When will European capitals do something about this invasion? " he declared.
Hegseth's comments come at a time when immigration has become one of the main political topics in Europe and parties supporting tougher border policies are gaining ground in many countries.
He also warned that the freedom won through sacrifices during World War II should not be taken for granted.
" The people who fought and died here restored freedom to Europe. This freedom must be protected by today's generation of leaders, otherwise what they fought for will prove temporary ," Hegseth said.
His statements follow similar comments from other figures in President Donald Trump's administration. Trump himself has repeatedly criticized European immigration policies, arguing that uncontrolled migration poses a threat to the continent's future.
The Trump administration has placed the fight against illegal immigration at the center of its domestic policies, while significantly increasing arrests and law enforcement operations against undocumented immigrants in the United States.
