The Tirana Court has decided to postpone the execution of the prison sentence for 34-year-old Dorina Sejdini, ordering her release from the Institution for the Execution of Criminal Decisions for Women in Pojska, where she was being held together with her one-year-old baby.
The decision was made following a request submitted by defense attorney Bari Shyti, who requested the suspension of the execution of the final decision.
Dorina Sejdini was arrested a few days ago at the Muriqani border crossing, while returning from Germany with her family. Authorities announced that she had a final decision in effect against her, sentencing her to two months in prison for the criminal offense of domestic violence against her father-in-law.
After being notified of the existence of the decision, the 34-year-old woman voluntarily presented herself at Police Station No. 6 and was then transferred to the women's prison in Pojska.
Initially, her baby remained outside the institution, but a day later joined the mother, after the latter exercised her legal right to keep the child under the age of three. Meanwhile, the other two minor children, ages 7 and 2, remained in the care of family members.
The case sparked widespread public and institutional reactions. The Ombudsman visited the 34-year-old in prison and demanded a full verification of the procedures followed, while the Presidency announced that it was closely following the case and was ready to consider the possibility of granting a presidential pardon.
In the session held this Thursday, the Tirana Court accepted the request to postpone the execution of the sentence, enabling the immediate release of Dorina Sejdini from prison. In the meantime, the case will continue to be pursued through legal channels regarding the criminal decision given against her.
