The new draft law on "Gender Equality", which has arrived in parliament, has sparked strong public debates.
The final draft text has expanded the definition of gender, describing it as an “inclusive” concept, in line with the principles of equality and non-discrimination, extending it beyond the classic division between man and woman. This implies the legal recognition of other gender identities and the right of individuals to declare their gender expression. This strong change compared to the initial version has prompted numerous reactions.
One of the most critical voices is presenter Albana Osmani, who has made a lengthy public statement. She stated that this bill should not be passed, as according to her it constitutes a distortion of family values and human nature.
"I refuse without hesitation," Osmani writes, emphasizing that she cannot accept a Europe where, as she says, children and young people are pushed to identify with something that is not part of their nature, risking being transformed into "objects of ridicule that are equated with animals or objects."
In her response, Osmani underlines that mothers and fathers, as the source of life and the foundation of the family, risk losing their meaning in a society where, according to her, traditional values are being challenged by “imposed agendas.” She publicly asks whether citizens have been consulted on this law and whether the people have been given a say in such a decision that affects the future of generations.
"Personally, not only would I not vote for it, I would never accept it," she added.
At the end of the reaction, Osmani says that this step is not modernization, but a great danger for the future of Albanian children, also linking it to historical figures who fought for national identity. This strong reaction of hers has divided public opinion in two, further adding to the debate about the draft law on gender equality.
