Frank Somerville, the former popular news anchor at KTVU-TV, has been arrested for the fourth time in the last five years.
According to Oakland police, the incident occurred on Monday around 5:45 p.m., when authorities received a report of a physical altercation at an apartment. Although authorities did not release the name of the person arrested, Somerville himself admitted in a social media post that he was involved in the incident.
In his confession, the 67-year-old alleged that his daughter had come to his house asking for money and that she was in a “bad state” due to her marijuana addiction. He said he asked her to leave, but the situation escalated into a physical altercation, from which he emerged with several injuries that he shared on social media to “tell the truth.”
"I love my daughter more than anything. I would never intentionally hurt her. But sometimes, when situations get tough, bad things happen," he wrote, claiming he was sober at the time of the incident and had been sober for nine months.
After his daughter left the house, Somerville contacted his ex-wife, who expressed fears that her daughter might attack him too. But by the time he arrived at her apartment, the police were already there and arrested him immediately.
Somerville has often been in the spotlight for strange behavior and legal troubles, especially after leaving television in 2021. He was involved in a car accident while driving under the influence and shortly after appeared on the news in an erratic state, slurring his words. He later blamed the behavior on accidentally taking an overdose of Ambien pills.
In 2023, Somerville was arrested twice within the same night, first for violence against his brother and then after being found drunk in a vehicle.
Sources close to the family say that his problems began to worsen after his divorce from his wife, who officially requested a separation just a week after his first arrest.
Somerville was released on bail after his latest arrest while the investigation into the incident continues. He did not hesitate to use social media to give his version of events, while many commentators expressed concern about his mental state and family relationships.
While he claims to be fighting for his sobriety, repeated run-ins with the law are casting a heavy shadow over his professional past as one of the most recognizable faces of news in the US.
