French newspaper L'Équipe has revealed for the first time inside details of the Formula 1 champion's battle for life and the extraordinary operation to protect his privacy.
On December 29, 2013, Michael Schumacher, seven-time Formula 1 world champion, suffered a serious accident while skiing in Méribel, France. More than twelve years later, his health remains one of the greatest mysteries of world sport.
In a lengthy report, the French newspaper L'Équipe reconstructs the critical months of Schumacher's treatment at Grenoble University Hospital, where family, doctors and authorities erected an almost impenetrable wall around the German legend.
The accident that shocked the world
On the morning of December 29, 2013, Schumacher was skiing with his son Mick and a friend on the slopes of Méribel when he fell and suffered a serious head injury.
The pilot of the rescue helicopter, Yannick Dainese, was immediately informed of the patient's identity.
“At first I thought it was a joke. But when they ordered us to take off our microphones and GoPro cameras and not allow journalists to accompany us, I realized it was real,” he recalls.
From the first minutes after the accident, the family established an iron rule: no photos, no videos, and no information about the champion’s condition.
Decisive hours in Grenoble
Schumacher was rushed to Grenoble University Hospital, where neurosurgeons diagnosed very severe brain damage.
Professor Stephan Chabardès, one of the doctors who operated on him, recalls that the situation was extremely critical.
"When I saw the results after the first operation, I realized that the condition was much more serious than we had initially thought."
According to doctors, Schumacher had multiple hematomas on the brain, cerebral edema and severe signs of intracranial pressure. He was placed in an artificial coma and underwent several surgical interventions.
Corinna Schumacher took control of everything
From the moment of arrival in Grenoble, Corinna Schumacher became the central figure of the entire process.
Professor Jean-François Payen, head of anesthesia-resuscitation, says he immediately developed a special relationship with the champion's wife.
