The well-known Cypriot businessman and president of the "Karmiotissa" football team, Stavros Demosthenous, has been killed in a mafia assassination attempt in the city of Limassol.
According to preliminary information from the police, the perpetrators followed Demosthenous and opened fire on him as he moved. The attackers, who are suspected to be professionals and informed of the victim's movements, made sure he was dead before leaving the scene.
A few minutes after the crime, a burned-out car was found in another area of Limassol, believed to have been used by the perpetrators to flee.
Investigations have begun immediately, with the main lead examining a possible connection of the murder to suspicious sports betting activities.
The Karmiotissa club, managed by Demosthenous, has previously been the subject of investigations by UEFA over repeated suspicions of match-fixing.
According to information from the Cypriot police, there were two perpetrators of the crime, they were traveling in a stolen van and as soon as the 49-year-old man came out of the door of the house, they shot him.
His son put him in the car and tried to take him to the hospital. However, on the way, Demosthenous died and the car collided with other cars on the highway, so initially the information said that he was killed in his car with his son next to him.
