English city bans phones for children under 14, positive effects felt within a

Unlike some European countries, the United Kingdom does not have a law banning smartphones in schools to protect the health of children and adolescents.

But St Albans, a city of 75,000 people northwest of London, has undertaken an even bolder experiment: it has launched a campaign to ban smartphones for children under 14 altogether.

A year later, the effects are generally positive and there has also been an impact on the rest of the country.

Last May, the city's primary school union sent an open letter to parents and guardians of students, urging them not to buy them smartphones, at least until they turned 14.

In the letter, the principals recalled that smartphones were no longer allowed in their schools: they asked, however, to reassess the “normal” age at which children should be allowed to surf the internet for free.

The goal, according to the letter, was for adults to actively collaborate in trying to temper these expectations and at the same time prevent children from wanting a smartphone just because all their classmates had one.

Then, schools proposed that parents sign a pact promising to postpone the purchase of smartphones until after their 14th birthday.

They also proposed banning access to social networks, such as Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat, until the age of 16, as controls on the age of users exist but can be bypassed.

Matthew Tavender, the headteacher of Cunningham Hill, one of those schools, told The Guardian that the letter was signed by more than half of the responsible adults at his school.

According to a survey, three-quarters of 10- to 11-year-olds had a smartphone in December 2023, compared to just seven, or 12 per cent, now. Similar findings have been reported at other schools in St Albans.

The principals of the schools involved, more than thirty, have noticed that without smartphones, students' attention spans have improved and the way they connect with each other has also improved: they talk and play together more, whereas before they tended to be more sedentary.

While some problems undoubtedly persist, the lack of access to messaging apps like WhatsApp exposes them less to obscene or vulgar content; as a result, fewer smartphones are seen even among older students, principals always say.

It is estimated that, despite the lack of a specific law, almost all schools in the UK currently ban or at least restrict the use of smartphones in the classroom.

The main concern is the use of WhatsApp, because in addition to offensive content, it is easy to circulate pornographic videos, indecent photos and violent images; then you risk ending up in a group chat with hundreds of people, often strangers, where it even happens that children are asked for photos of a sexual nature.

The Internet Safety Act, a set of measures designed to strengthen security on social networks, gaming apps and the internet in general, will come into force in the United Kingdom on July 25.

However, critics say that these measures are insufficient to protect children and adolescents and the government should intervene to limit the use of smartphones as much as possible, even in high schools, and at the same time provide training on the subject.

On the other hand, a recent study by the University of Birmingham has highlighted that banning smartphones in schools, in itself, does not improve students' grades or well-being and does not reduce their use.

Overall, the proposal to ban smartphones completely was well received by most adults. Some parents have accused teachers who support it of being anti-technology.

In a letter to The Guardian, a professor argued that his profession is to teach students how to manage smartphones and the content and misinformation that circulates.
