The lawyer for R. Kelly, the former king of R&B music, has filed an emergency motion in federal court to release him from prison and to
placed under house arrest, claiming that the singer's life is in serious danger. According to the documents filed, three officials from the US Federal Bureau of Prisons (Bureau of Prisons) are alleged to have hatched a plan to kill Kelly through another inmate. The request also includes a statement from inmate Michael Glenn Stine, who claims that while he was in a federal prison in Tucson, Arizona, three high-ranking BOP officials asked him to carry out the plan.
Stine, who claims to have been a long-time member of the Aryan Brotherhood, says he once held the title of “commissioner,” which gave him the authority to order beatings, stabbings, and even murders, which were carried out by other members of the group. He further claims that a BOP official who had previously ordered attacks and murders on prisoners had suggested to him to eliminate R. Kelly. After this suggestion, Stine was transferred to Butner Federal Prison in North Carolina, where R. Kelly is serving his sentence, and ended up in the same ward as him.
According to him, after completing his "task," officials promised him the opportunity to escape from prison and spend the last months of his life as a "free man," an offer that tempted him because at the time, he says, he had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. In the legal document, Stine states that upon arriving at FCI Butner, one of the officials told him, "You have to do what you came here for." He adds that after weeks of surveillance on R. Kelly, he suddenly changed his mind and decided to warn the singer about the plot against him, indicating that the officials had assigned him the task of killing him.
Stine also expressed his willingness to submit to a polygraph test to prove the veracity of his statements and is willing to reveal the names of prisoners who have been involved in violence or murders in which he himself has been involved over the years. R. Kelly's lawyer writes that, despite Stine's criminal past, his allegations are serious and require "drastic measures" to protect his client's life. "Continuing to hold Kelly in prison while he knows his life is in danger constitutes cruel and unusual punishment," he stated.
Attorney Beau Brindley told People magazine that his client had been attacked before in prison, and fears of another incident have been heightened by concerns that prison authorities are unwilling or unable to protect him. R. Kelly is currently serving a 30-year sentence after convictions for child pornography, extortion and human trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation.
