Mariah Carey's mother Patricia and sister Alison have passed away within a day.
"I am heartbroken to have lost my mother last weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” the Grammy-winning singer, 55, said in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE.
"I feel blessed to have been able to spend the last week with my mother before she passed away," adds Mariah.
"I appreciate everyone's love, support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time."
Other details, including the causes of death for Patricia and Alison, are not known at this time.
Patricia, who was previously married to Alfred Roy Carey, was an opera singer and singing teacher. The parents divorced later when the "Hero" singer was 3 years old.
Mariah's relationship with her mother, from whom she inherited her vocal talent, has been complicated throughout her life, even accusing her of systematically abusing her when she was young.
But the singer did not have a good relationship even with her sister, now deceased. Earlier in the media, accusations against each other "exploded", where the singer accused her sister of having drugged her, tried to sell her as a prostitute, and even accused her of throwing hot tea on her when she was only 12 years old, accusations which were not were never tried.
However, now the singer is very moved by the loss of both.
