A momentary mistake sent 150,000 euros to landfill and mobilized local authorities in the Puglia region, in southern Italy.
According to Italian media reports, a 57-year-old man accidentally threw a metal box containing 20 gold bars, which he had collected over the years, into the trash. The incident occurred in a coastal area of the region, when the bag with the box ended up in a public bin and was then transported, as usual, to the waste disposal site.
The man realized his mistake a day later and immediately notified authorities, explaining that he had thrown away the box he was storing the gold in with the trash. Security cameras confirmed his version, proving that it was a mistake and not an unfounded statement.
Meanwhile, the waste had already been transported to the landfill. Police and cleaning service workers began searching through the large amounts of waste in an attempt to find the metal box.
After several hours of searching, authorities were able to locate the box, which had suffered damage from transportation and compaction of debris. However, the contents were intact. All 20 gold bars were returned to their owner.
