In the heart of the Peruvian mountains, between the snow and the silence of the heights, a young Englishman who loved the Spanish language and who was known on social networks as "El guero ingles" ("the little English blond") lived a unique adventure, accompanied by an unusual and extraordinary friend, a stray dog, who appeared out of nowhere to save him, writes La Stampa.
During an expedition to Santa Cruz, near the city of Huaraz, the young man hoped to reach the suggestive passage of Punta Union, 4750 meters above sea level.
The road was not easy, as snow, cold and a dense fog made the climb even more difficult. On the second day of the walk, having overtaken the other members of the group, he found himself completely alone, at the mercy of uncertainty as to which direction to follow.
Just at that moment of confusion, like a kind of vision, a dog appeared out of the mist, approaching in a friendly manner and wagging its tail. The young Englishman's disbelief was great, how could a dog be there, in the middle of nowhere and so high up? Amazingly, the animal seemed to know the way and showed no signs of being lost.
At that moment, the English blond realized that the only thing to do was to rely on the instincts of his new "friend" and follow his silent "guide".
"I decided to trust his knowledge of the mountains," he said.
The dog, fast and determined, walked quickly along the road, almost as if he was used to the places. From time to time, the silhouette of his "four-legged guide" would disappear into the mist and then reappear, as if waiting for the climber to catch up.
In the end, the road led them both to the sign indicating Punta Union: the young man was lost, but his new furry "friend" had found the way to the top for him. After reaching the finish line, the dog stopped next to the blond, like a true adventure companion, silently waiting for the other climbers to arrive.
To everyone's surprise, they found another dog waiting for them the next day, and the two dogs continued with the hikers for another 22 kilometers, giving them some peace and security during the difficult journey.
In the evening, they slept by the tents, like two loyal guards watching over their new friends.
On the last day, before the end of the road, the English blond realized that the dogs had disappeared. He couldn't believe that his companion had left like that, without a final goodbye. But when he reached the end of the path, right next to a small cafe, he found his four-legged friend sitting, calm and as if waiting for a last look.
A local resident explained to the hiker that those dogs lived in the villages in the area and used to follow tourists on their walks, almost as if they were trained guides.
But to the Englishman that dog had been no mere stray animal seeking company, but a true companion, a silent guardian who had made his Peruvian adventure memorable.
