One of the most powerful drug trafficking networks, linked to the Albanian mafia, was dismantled in Spain.
The Civil Guard and the National Police made public on Thursday new details and videos from the major operation that brought about the dismantling of one of the most powerful drug trafficking networks of recent years, linked to the Albanian mafia and with the island of Ibiza as a strategic point.
Operation Enroque Bal/Manso was carried out in six phases between July and November, following more than two years of investigation. The raids were carried out in Ibiza, Mallorca, Valencia and other areas of the Mediterranean, involving special assault teams, undercover agents and air support, as seen in footage released by security forces.
Ibiza, entry point into the Mediterranean for drugs
The criminal organization trafficked cocaine and hashish through the waters of Ibiza, using high-powered dinghies that came from North Africa or South America. At sea, they would set up meeting points with merchant ships and exchange waterproof bags equipped with GPS.
The cargoes were stored in Ibiza before being sent to Mallorca, mainland Spain and several European countries. In one of the intercepted trips, authorities seized 675 kilograms of cocaine at the port of Valencia, which had previously passed through the island.
An arsenal, millions of euros and an international network
During the 71 checks conducted, agents seized 687 kilograms of cocaine, 2,500 kilograms of hashish, 3 kilograms of marijuana, one kilogram of methamphetamine, LSD, heroin and speed, as well as 1.5 million euros in cash, 16 firearms, silencers, vehicles, luxury watches, works of art and electronic tracking equipment.
The investigation shows that the network operated as an international criminal enterprise, with units dedicated to transportation, storage, accounting and money laundering, as well as connections to Eastern European clans, lawyers, police and tourist accommodation managers.
A police inspector and a lawyer among those arrested
A total of 76 people were arrested, including suspected leader Stefan Milojevic, considered the executive arm of the Albanian mafia in Spain; lawyer Gonzalo Márquez, identified as the financial mastermind of the network; and National Police inspector Faustino Nogales, accused of leaking confidential information to the organization.
All three are in custody, while investigations continue to determine the full extent of the network and its connections to other European countries.
Operation footage: simultaneous controls and air interventions
Videos released by the Civil Guard and National Police show simultaneous searches of apartments in Mallorca, Ibiza and Valencia, with special unit agents forcibly entering properties, drug-sniffing dogs and police vehicles securing the roads.
The footage also shows naval controls, seizures of drug packages and cash, as well as aerial intervention by helicopters during the most intense phases of the operation.
