United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres warned that the security situation in the Middle East has reached a critical point, while the ongoing conflict is increasing the risk of further escalation in the region.
Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting, Guterres said recent developments were pushing the region "to the brink of the unimaginable."
"The situation is spiraling out of control. It is teetering on the brink of the unimaginable. The region is being dragged into an ever-widening spiral of confrontation. One crisis fuels another. One escalation causes another ," he declared.
According to Guterres, the continued deterioration of the situation is making it increasingly difficult to achieve political objectives, as the dynamics of confrontation are prevailing over diplomatic efforts.
"As this dynamic worsens, political objectives are increasingly obscured by the confrontation itself ," said the UN Secretary-General.
