Coach Jose Mourinho has ordered Benfica players to stay at the club's training ground after their defeat to Braga in the semi-finals of the League Cup. The Portuguese manager said he wanted them to " not sleep, but think a lot " after the disappointing defeat. Benfica suffered a 3-1 defeat on Wednesday, finishing the match with 10 men after former Manchester City defender Nicolas Otamendi was sent off.
Mourinho, who was appointed coach in September, has hinted that the players will remain at the club's training base in Seixal for an indefinite period. " The players will sleep in Seixal, and on Thursday there is training, and the day after that there is training ," Mourinho told a news conference after the defeat by Braga. He added: " When we arrive in Seixal [on Wednesday], everyone will go to their rooms. I hope the players sleep as well as I do, which means they won't sleep at all. That's what I wish them. That they don't sleep and instead think a lot, like I will think ."
Mourinho began his coaching career with Benfica in 2000 but managed just 10 games before leaving after a falling out with the club's president. In this second spell, he has won 14 of his 23 games in charge of Benfica, and Wednesday's defeat ended an 11-match unbeaten run. Benfica travel to Porto for the Portuguese Cup quarter-finals next Wednesday. Mourinho's team are currently third in the Portuguese Primeira Liga, 10 points behind leaders Sporting Lisbon.
The coach stressed the importance of dialogue with the players. “ On Thursday we can start talking, which didn’t happen in the dressing room ,” Mourinho said. “ In the dressing room it was a monologue, and monologues don’t work for me; I like to have a dialogue with the players. We will talk about the differences between the first and second half and prepare in the best way possible for the game against Porto .”
