After eight years at Leipzig, Kevin Kampl, a midfielder born in 1990, has decided to retire from playing football. The Slovenian player has made 283 appearances, scoring 10 goals.

A footballer who won the hearts of fans after having the opportunity to sign with more prestigious clubs, but remained loyal to the team.

So why did he decide to leave mid-season? The reason is very personal and not related to the field.

Kampl has chosen to return to Slovenia to care for his ailing father. After suddenly losing his brother Seki in October, the midfielder decided to support his family, putting football on the back burner.

Mourning and illness: ' Time is precious'. Everything changed last October with the sudden passing of his brother Seki. It was a heavy blow that became even heavier in the following weeks due to his father's illness. In the midst of this intense pain, Kampl had no doubts. 'The sudden loss of my brother made me realize how precious time is and how important it is to spend it with the people you love the most - Kampl wrote in a message to the fans - after all these years I realized that the time has come to return home, also because my father is not in good health. It is time that will never come back '

Farewell to a leader. Leipzig understood the human side of the player's request by accepting the early termination of the contract that will come at the end of the month. Kampl leaves after a decade as a protagonist; arrived in 2017, Kampl has played 283 games with 13 goals scored and 23 assists with Leipzig, winning 2 German Cups and a German Super Cup and has also reached the semi-finals of the Champions League

Marcel Schäfer, the club's CEO, paid tribute to him: ' His decision to focus on his family deserves the utmost respect and highlights his excellent character,' he said.

Kampl will make his last public appearance on January 17th in the big match against Bayern Munich. Regarding the future, Kampl leaves the door half open, but admits: ' Will I return to the field one day? At the moment it seems absolutely unrealistic,' he said.
